Coaching Perspective Author
I came to coaching accidentally. It was the one-to-one work done alongside the “real work” of organization change and leadership development in the then most admired company in the world. My work at GE was innovative, at the cutting edge of corporate transformation. I worked with C-Suite leaders and newcomers, with small teams and large systems in multi-billion dollar global businesses, with leading consultants and ground-breaking academics. After GE, I consulted with other large global companies on similar issues for two decades. I have a keen understanding of the role of personal action in enterprise performance, and of the impact of enterprise culture and systems on individuals. I continue to consult and coach in the US and Finland.
My current work focuses on the lives of women at midlife and beyond. It is based on a quarter century of continuing research with alumnae of my alma mater, Smith College. My writing partner and I share women’s stories and journeys with our generation and with women who are coming after us. Although contexts and conditions change, women’s lives tend to follow similar patterns. Old issues we thought were settled are re-emerging, so we have a lot to say through our speaking, facilitated conversations, consulting, coaching, writing and continuing research.
I have been an associate professor on the MBA faculty at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, have coached undergraduate engineers at MIT, and serve on the board of FinTech Women of Boston. My MBA is from Columbia, and my PhD is from Fielding.
I live in my ideal place, the Berkshires of Massachusetts. It is the summer home of the Boston Symphony, where I volunteer. I am a Trustee of the Boston Early Music Festival and also participate in a number of theater and literary organizations. To support my community, I have headed non-profit and town efforts to improve adult literacy and housing affordability. My husband and I rely on our dogs to get us out in nature, but never often enough.
